Awakening the Witness Within

Understand that the difficulties are within your own mind. Once you become aware of this, you can begin the process of removing your inner weaknesses. Only the inner silence, stillness, and relaxation that we gain through meditation will help.” — Amma

As the seasons begin to shift this September, we are reminded of the natural ebb and flow of life. Just as the weather changes, so do our inner landscapes. We all experience moments when heavier, darker clouds roll in—times when sadness, frustration, or anger threaten to disrupt our peace. When we are caught in these storms, it is easy to feel overwhelmed or to judge ourselves for not feeling “spiritual enough.”

How do we maintain our warmth and joy when these heavier moments arise? Amma reminds us that “Both heaven and hell are created by the mind!” A secret to navigating these storms begins with our Integrated Amrita Meditation (IAM®) practice.

This daily meditation is a vital remedy for when we are struggling, the very foundation that builds our inner resilience. The real fruit of our practice reaches far beyond our experience during the technique, gently transforming our lives throughout the day. By learning to observe our thoughts during our practice, we carry that resilience into our daily life, stepping back instead of getting swept away by the current of heavy emotions. As Amma tells us, “To become a witness is to really wake up and become conscious of everything that happens, both within and without.

When anger or sorrow surfaces, the comforting sanctuary of our practice allows us to step directly into the role of the observer. We don't have to push the underlying thoughts away—instead, we can simply witness them as they rise. By watching them from this calm center instead of getting tangled in the feelings they stir up, we maintain our peace. As Amma simply explains, “Our thoughts are our own creation. We make them real by cooperating with them. If we remove our support from them, then they just dissolve. Look closely at your thoughts without judging them and see how they gradually fade.

The most beautiful part of this gentle inner awareness is that it doesn’t just heal us; its warmth naturally radiates outward. When we lighten our own minds by choosing to witness rather than react, we subtly lighten the atmosphere of our daily lives. The quiet peace you cultivate naturally flows into your home, your community, and beyond, offering a profound gift to everyone around you.

“Any spiritual practice you do benefits the entire world. The vibrations from your japa (repeating a mantra), chanting and meditation, purify the atmosphere as well as your own mind. Without even being aware of it, you spread peace and quietude to those who come in contact with you.” — Amma
