Hands in the Soil, Hearts in the Mission: Earth Day at Amrita Farms

This Earth Day, Amrita Farms blossomed with life and community spirit as over 85 volunteers gathered to plant 108 apple trees in a heartfelt effort to honor and nurture Mother Nature. Hosted in collaboration with Sewa Detroit, the event drew participants from across Michigan and even as far as Chicago, bringing together local organizations like the Sai Group and KPIT to create a day filled with service, learning, and joy.
The day commenced with a serene inaugural prayer led by Swami Dayamritananda Puri, a senior monastic disciple of humanitarian leader Mata Amritanandamayi (Amma) and the Executive Director of MA Centers. Swami’s blessings and message set a tone of reverence and gratitude, reminding everyone of the sacredness of the Earth and the value of giving back.
Planting Trees, Growing Community
Volunteers paired up in teams of two or three to plant each tree, guided by expert instruction on apple tree care and growth. The act of digging, planting, and nurturing was more than just physical labor—it was a symbolic commitment to a greener future.
During the mid-day “Lunch and Learn” session, participants were treated to nourishing food and fruitful discussions about the lifecycle and importance of apple trees. Attendees were invited to return for seasonal u-pick experiences to witness their contributions come to life.
Swami Dayamritananda Puri also took a moment to honor Sewa Detroit with a special award, recognizing the ongoing partnership and shared mission of community service and environmental stewardship.
A Day of Fun, Learning, and Legacy
While adults dug in, the younger generation enjoyed a variety of Earth-themed activities. Children at the Earth Day event took part in hands-on activities that introduced them to caring for the environment in fun and engaging ways. They made seed bombs using soil and wildflower seeds, learning how small actions can help local ecosystems thrive.
The event also included a seasonal Easter egg hunt, providing children with a balanced experience that combined environmental engagement with community-building. These activities underscored Amrita Farms’ commitment to making sustainability a shared, intergenerational effort.
By involving children in meaningful ways, the Earth Day event successfully planted not only trees but also early seeds of environmental responsibility and community service.
Voices from the Field
Saylee from Sewa Detroit shared:
"We are grateful for the trust you've placed in us and for the opportunity to work as a team. Yesterday's event, which drew around 85 volunteers, demonstrated our community's passion for nature conservation. We're excited to participate in future pruning and planting events annually. Amrita Farms plays a vital role in our community as a non-profit space dedicated to nature conservation. Together We Serve Better!"
A University of Michigan student volunteer said:
"Personally I love plants and I love being with nature. This was a great way for me to get closer to nature and a good break from the stressful semester. This being the second time, I had more fun since I learnt a lot from the first experience and could apply it here. The best part, community service. Overall amazing experience and great community. Looking forward to more such plantation events in the future."
A first-time volunteer from the Sai Group reflected:
"It was my first time doing plantation. Glad that I got to learn something new and contribute to nature. Really liked the rationale of Amrita Farms. And finally, never say no to free food. Overall, I had a great time."
