Cleaning the Earth, Reflecting Within

In response to Amma’s wish that her children care for Mother Nature for World Cleanup Day, MACMI volunteers joined hands with Swami Dayamaritananda for a cleanup seva along the Huron River and a section of highway adopted by AYUDH Michigan under the Adopt-A-Highway Program. Though it took place the day before World Cleanup Day, the spirit of the global movement was very much alive in every participant’s heart.

The seva was carried out with both dedication and joy. Volunteers even turned it into a friendly challenge—who could find the most unusual piece of trash? With much excitement, young Keshav Krishna won by discovering a large water tube hidden in the riverside bushes.

A valuable lesson emerged during the cleanup. At first glance, the path looked clean, but a closer look revealed cigarette butts, candy wrappers, and bottle caps scattered along the way. One volunteer reflected, “It’s just like life—ego may make us think we don’t have much to work on, but when we look closer, we see the hidden work still to be done within ourselves.”

Every piece of trash collected became more than a physical act of cleaning—it was an offering of gratitude to Mother Nature and an inner reminder of self-reflection. Through this seva, Amma’s message of serving both the world and the heart shone brightly.
