Christmas in July Brings Holiday Cheer

Christmas came early this year for families at Alpha House in Ann Arbor. For years, MA Center Michigan volunteers have visited the shelter during the holiday season to sing carols. This summer, they decided to bring that tradition to July. The idea came together when Shreeja, a MA Center Michigan volunteer, reached out to Matt, another longtime volunteer and DJ, about helping create a Christmas-themed celebration. Matt was immediately enthusiastic, and the Alpha House team welcomed the idea, anticipating that the children would enjoy the unexpected bit of holiday magic.

On the morning of the celebration, volunteers served breakfast as Christmas carols filled the room. Families gathered around the tables, sharing a meal while volunteers sang nearby. Children were also given small art boxes as gifts, adding a creative touch to the festivities. The holiday spirit continued outdoors, where children painted and decorated a North Pole bakery kit alongside volunteers. Laughter, music and bright colors transformed an ordinary summer morning into something that felt distinctly like Christmas.

For the volunteers, the day offered more than an opportunity to celebrate a holiday out of season. It was a reminder of how simple acts of service can create moments of connection and joy. At Alpha House, Christmas in July wasn't about the calendar—it was about creating a welcoming space where families could share a meal, make something together and experience a little unexpected happiness.
