Elgin Community Support

In 2025, a large tent encampment in Elgin was destroyed by fire, displacing the individuals who called it home. The City of Elgin stepped in to relocate residents to a local hotel, where it continues to fund their stay. While the hotel has provided stability and shelter from extreme weather, food access remains a persistent challenge. With only a microwave available to most residents - and a refrigerator available to only some - preparing meals in their rooms is difficult. The Illinois Food Bank has been supplying frozen meals, canned goods, non-perishable items, and personal hygiene products to help bridge the gap.
The need recently became urgent when the program coordinator called a community member to report that residents had just one day of frozen meals remaining. Fortunately, AYUDH Chicago had just wrapped up a winter holiday food drive and was able to quickly purchase what was needed - including breakfast foods and essential hygiene products - ensuring no one went without.
On Valentine's Day, several ashram residents went a step further, preparing small goody bags filled with chocolates and handwritten cards to deliver to the hotel guests. The sevite who brought them reported something simple but meaningful: the recipients responded with smiles.
