Socks for the Homeless Project

People who experience homelessness, and especially those individuals who are unsheltered, suffer in a multitude of ways including being vulnerable to the elements especially in cold and wet weather. These individuals are in need of protecting their feet. Socks are the number one requested clothes item of individuals experiencing homelessness.

In 2014, MAC New England began the Socks for the Homeless Project as a component of Embracing the World. Initially donations were either by donating socks or a monetary donation. Pranata, a New England devotee, then purchased tube socks and donated them to a shelter in Cambridge Massachusetts.

For the past six years, socks have been donated to a shelter in Providence, Rhode Island. The number of pairs of socks donated has varied year to year. Efforts were certainly hindered during the height of the COVID pandemic.

In the winter of 2022/2023, MAC New England had a banner year of 1182 pairs of new, thick socks that were donated.

For 2024/2025, through March, MAC New England will have donated over 800 pairs of socks. The project will continue through April.
