MA Center Atlanta - Rainwater Harvesting Initiative

MA Center Atlanta has been managing an organic vegetable garden to promote sustainable living and provide fresh, chemical-free produce for the past 9 years. This project involves preparing raised beds, enriching the soil with natural compost, and planting a variety of seasonal vegetables. Amma devotees actively participate in planting and maintaining the garden. This initiative not only contributes to healthy eating but also serves as a community-building activity and educational platform for children and adults on the benefits of organic farming.
Rainwater Harvesting
To conserve water and practice environmental stewardship, MA Center Atlanta has implemented a rainwater harvesting system. Two IBC totes each with 275 gallons capacity and plumbing system were installed to collect rainwater from roof runoff. The stored water is used for irrigating the vegetable garden and landscaping, thereby reducing reliance on county water supply. This project lowers water costs, demonstrates responsible resource management, and serves as a practical example of conservation for the community.
Bird & Butterfly Garden
MA Center Atlanta has created a bird and butterfly garden to support local biodiversity and provide a welcoming natural habitat for pollinators. Native flowering plants and shrubs were selected to attract butterflies, bees, and birds. The garden enhances the beauty of the ashram grounds, promotes ecological balance, and provides a peaceful space for reflection. It also raises awareness of the importance of pollinators in food security and environmental health.
Planting of Satsuma Orange Trees
As part of a long-term sustainability effort, MA Center Atlanta had planted several fruit trees on its grounds in the past. These include pear, plum, apple, fig, persimmon etc. This year we planted two satsuma orange trees. The trees were strategically placed to enhance the landscape and offer shade in the future. This initiative symbolizes growth, nourishment, and the ashram’s commitment to leaving a lasting environmental legacy for Amma’s devotees and wider community.
