Earthday Cleanup by Minnesota Satsang

Our group sees the cleanup as an act of spiritual service.

Earth Day Cleanup 2025: MN AMMA Satsang Joins Minneapolis’ Largest Environmental Service Event

Each spring, thousands of Minneapolis residents unite for a common purpose: to care for the Earth. The ‘Earth Day Cleanup’ has grown to become the largest community service event in the city, spanning more than 40 cleanup sites across Minneapolis’ renowned park system. Since its founding in 2008, this initiative has mobilized over 23,000 volunteers, who together have removed more than 165,000 pounds of litter from public parks, trails, and riverfronts.

Organized by Mississippi Park Connection, the National Park Service, and the City of Minneapolis, the event represents a powerful example of civic engagement and environmental stewardship. This year, the event expanded its reach to include the North Mississippi Regional Park, a key stretch of urban wilderness along the Mississippi River and home to diverse plant and animal life.

MN AMMA Satsang: Serving the Planet with Love and Reverence

Guided by Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma)’s teachings of compassion, service, and ecological awareness, the Minnesota AMMA Satsang has been a proud participant in this city-wide initiative. Each year, our volunteers join the Earth Day Cleanup to express gratitude to Mother Nature and to contribute meaningfully to the well-being of our shared environment.

Amma reminds us:

" The Earth is our mother. She nourishes us and provides everything we need. It is our duty to treat her with love and respect.”

Inspired by this ethos, our group sees the cleanup not just as a task, but as an act of spiritual service. By removing debris and restoring the natural beauty of the parks, we hope to foster deeper awareness, collective responsibility, and joy in environmental care.

A Tradition of Seva (Selfless Service)

Whether it's picking up litter along the Mississippi River or engaging in conversations about sustainability with fellow participants, each interaction during the Earth Day Cleanup reaffirms our core values—community, compassion, and conservation. This year’s event was especially heartening, with increased turnout, renewed friendships, and shared resolve to protect our planet.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the organizers, city staff, and volunteers who made this event impactful. MN AMMA Satsang remains committed to participating in environmental initiatives and will continue to honor Amma’s message through action.
