About the Instructor

Brahmacharini Shobhana is an award-winning yoga practitioner and Director of Amrita Yoga at Amritapuri Math in Kerala, India. Amritapuri is the main ashram of Sri Mata Amritanandamayi, known to millions throughout the world as Amma, the “hugging saint”. Shobhana is an inspiring and much-loved teacher wherever she goes in India and the West. This is a wonderful opportunity to benefit from her immense expertise by participating in group or individual instructional or therapeutic sessions.

Shobhana has dedicated her life to the pursuit of authentic yoga as a monastic in Amma’s ashram. Her life is itself one of the most inspiring examples of the impact of yoga on health and recovery from illness. In 2001 she suffered a serious spinal injury, which caused her to spend much of the next two years in a wheelchair. Through intense yogic practices, she was able to recover her mobility and take on a more active role teaching yoga to others. As director of Amrita Yoga® since 2004 she has taught more than 2000 workshops, classes and retreats to people from all over the world. Her work serves to bridge the gap between traditional Yoga practice and the practical needs of the West. Shobhana is one of only 12 members on Government of India’s Committee for Yoga Education, which forms the curriculum courses in Indian Universities.
