The Amma Canada Farm is a 14-acre property in Georgetown, Ontario, acquired in May 2008. An orchard was planted beginning in 2010, and the farm today features over 200 fruit trees (mostly apple and pear, with a few cherry), a half-acre vegetable garden, and four beehives. Since 2008, everything has been grown using only fertilizers and pesticides approved by Health Canada for organic farming.
Care for the orchard, garden and hives is labour-intensive and run entirely by volunteers — planting and irrigating, weeding and pruning, hive maintenance and honey extraction. And then there’s the harvesting!
A small portion of the harvest is sold to support ongoing farm activities and Amma’s charities; the majority is donated to local food banks and food programs. In the 2023 season the orchard alone donated 12,821 lbs of apples and pears to food banks throughout the Greater Toronto Area — not counting the green beans, Swiss chard and kale from the veggie garden.
