ABOUT ONAM
The rich cultural heritage of Kerala is nowhere more apparent than during the ten day long festival of Onam. It commemorates the annual home-coming of the mythical, righteous King Mahabali as well as celebrates the Vaman avatar of Lord Vishnu. The centerpiece of the Onam celebration is the grand feast called Onasadya, prepared on Thiruvonam. It is a nine course meal consisting of 11 to 13 essential dishes traditionally served on a banana leaf
There is also the tradition of playing games, collectively called Onakalikal. Men do rigorous sports like Talappanthukali (played with a ball), Ambeyyal (Archery), Kutukutu and combats called Kayyankali and Attakalam.
Women participate in cultural activities making intricately designed flower mats called Pookalam for 10 days in the front yard of their house to welcome King Mahabali. They also perform traditional dances that add to the zest of celebrations.
