M.A. Center Atlanta has managed an organic vegetable garden for the past nine years — promoting sustainable living and providing fresh, chemical-free produce. Devotees prepare raised beds, enrich the soil with natural compost, and plant a variety of seasonal vegetables, making the garden both a source of healthy food and a place of community and learning for children and adults alike.
Rainwater Harvesting
To conserve water and practice environmental stewardship, the center installed a rainwater harvesting system: two 275-gallon IBC totes and plumbing that collect roof runoff. The stored water irrigates the vegetable garden and landscaping, reducing reliance on the county supply — a practical example of conservation for the whole community.
Bird & Butterfly Garden
The center also created a bird and butterfly garden of native flowering plants and shrubs to support local biodiversity and provide a habitat for butterflies, bees and birds — a peaceful space for reflection that raises awareness of the vital role pollinators play in food security and environmental health.
Fruit Trees
As part of a long-term sustainability effort, the center has planted fruit trees over the years — pear, plum, apple, fig and persimmon — and this year added two satsuma orange trees, a symbol of growth, nourishment and a lasting environmental legacy.
