Karthika Tree Planting Pledge

Karthika Tree Planting Pledge

A collective effort of the Ashrams and Satsangs in the Eastern US and Canada

Project Idea

The impetus behind the Karthika Tree Planting project is to present birthday dakshina (a gift or offering) to Amma in the form of planted trees. Amma has spoken often of the importance of tree planting and encouraged Her children to celebrate birthdays or special occasions by planting trees.

Amma addresses the Trillion Tree Campaign

Goal

From September 2021 to September 2022, the goal is to plant large numbers of trees in forests; deforestation, disease, insects, wildfires, and weather (e.g. storms) have dramatically depopulated forests.

  • We aim to do this by securing a minimum of 108 pledges of any dollar amount corresponding to Karthika (Amma’s monthly star “birthday”) in most months.
  • During the special months of September (Amma’s birthday month) and April (Earth Day), we hope to secure a minimum of 108 pledges of at least $10, in order to plant even greater numbers of trees.
  • Partnering with a tree plating organization to plant a tree for every dollar donated.

Project Rationale

  • Virtual tree planting will allow East Coast satsangs (and any Amma devotee anywhere) to collectively contribute to tree planting.
  • The emergence of COVID has temporarily slowed volunteer physical planting efforts.
  • Even when physical planting is again viable, those who are unable to plant trees themselves have another avenue to contribute to the effort.
  • As environmental imbalance is severe, large volume tree planting will be needed to address a problem of such magnitude. This is accomplished efficiently by large non-profits in partnership with government agencies. The good news is - we can contribute to and augment these efforts!
