For about 20 years, on the first Saturday of each month, Mother's Kitchen volunteers inspired by Amma have prepared and served a healthy vegetarian meal for the residents of a homeless women's shelter in Rockville, Maryland — a suburb of Washington, DC. Run by a non-profit social-service agency and funded primarily by the county government together with a broad range of faith groups, it is the only emergency shelter for homeless women in the county.
Serving there, month after month, is a quiet practice of compassion — a warm meal cooked and shared with women working to rebuild their lives. Today the greater DC chapter of Mother's Kitchen serves at shelters across four locations in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC, four weekends every month.
