Inspired by Amma’s campaign to clean up India, members of M.A. Center PNW launched the GreenFriends Litter Pickup Project in July 2011. Participants from Washington, Oregon, British Columbia and beyond have joined the effort. Initially organized as work parties, participants are now also encouraged to work individually.
In past years, participants reported their litter-pickup hours monthly — by September 2020 the total had reached 11,584 hours. The project received four grants from King County in 2011 and 2013 to assess cigarette litter in parks.
