A monthly birthday is traditionally observed in India based on the moon’s position at the time of birth. Karthika is the nakshatra — star constellation — in which the moon was transiting at the time of Amma’s birth. Each time the moon returns to this spot in the heavens, approximately every 28 days, is considered a day of dedication to Amma, and is celebrated by her children around the world.
