Feeding Santa Fe, One Sunday at a Time
Not long after the Santa Fe ashram was established in 1996, its residents — following Amma's philosophy of selfless service — began the Burrito Project to address food scarcity among the homeless and underserved of Santa Fe. It started with 108 homemade burrito lunches, handed out at parks and churches, and grew over the years into a steady weekly seva.
"If we have love and compassion in our hearts, then we will wholeheartedly serve those who suffer from lack of food, clothing and shelter."
— Amma
How It Works
Every Sunday morning from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m., more than thirty volunteers gather in the ashram kitchen. Some cook and pack the meals; others handle deliveries; and still others help behind the scenes with shopping and tortilla pickup. Each guest receives a warm homemade burrito along with a sack lunch of a banana, juice, chips and cookies. Today the meals go to two interfaith facilities — one supporting families in transitional housing, and another serving seniors experiencing homelessness.
The Burrito Project relies entirely on donations to keep going. To volunteer or to give, email ammachidas@gmail.com.
