About Us

Our Story

The Amma Center of New Mexico traces its origins to the summer of 1987, when Amma first visited North America and gathered 35 people in a Santa Fe home. The community formally incorporated as a nonprofit in 1993, and from 1987 to 2005 Amma visited every year. A temple was built to host her programs, and an ashram was inaugurated in June 1996. Today it is a thriving, volunteer-run spiritual community.

A High-Desert Sanctuary

The ashram sits amid the high-desert foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains — a landscape of clear night skies, arroyos, ponderosa and piñon trees, jackrabbits, coyotes and birdsong. Behind the ashram rises "Shiva Mountain," a hill that lends a mystical backdrop to the grounds. Learn more about Amma's worldwide humanitarian work at embracingtheworld.org.

Community & Service

The center offers spaces for worship, meditation instruction, educational programs and service opportunities. Weekly satsang gathers on Saturday evenings, alongside IAM meditation sessions, discussions, ceremonies and retreats led by Amma's senior disciples. Through the Burrito Project, the orchard and garden, and the weekly satsang meals, the community turns Amma's teaching of selfless service into steady, practical love.

How Can I Get Involved?

The weekly satsang is a wonderful way to experience the community, and every one of our service projects welcomes volunteers. To join our mailing list, email ammacenternm@macenters.org.
