The Most-Requested Item
Socks are the number-one requested clothing item among people experiencing homelessness — and among the hardest to keep clean, dry and warm through a New England winter. The Socks for the Homeless project answers that need with new, thick socks for those who need them most.
A Decade of Warmth
The project began in 2014, when a devotee named Pranata purchased and donated tube socks to a Cambridge, Massachusetts shelter. It has since grown and expanded to Providence, Rhode Island, where distributions have continued for six years. In the 2022–2023 winter, 1,182 pairs of new, thick socks were donated; in 2024–2025, more than 800 pairs. The project welcomes both sock donations and monetary gifts to purchase them.
