GreenFriends & Tree Planting

Caring for Mother Nature

Guided by Amma's call to care for the earth as our own mother, the M.A. Center DC GreenFriends put environmental awareness into practice — planting trees, cleaning up local waterways and tending the ashram's own organic garden.

Embracing the Trees

Embracing the Trees (ETT) is an initiative of GreenFriends North America, led by Swamini Ambikamrita Prana, established to encourage tree planting among the North American Amma Centers and devotees in response to Amma's emphasis on its importance. Each spring, in April and May, the DC community joins tree-planting excursions across the DMV area. To receive notice of group planting opportunities, email trees.macdc@macenters.org.

Earth Day & the Ashram Garden

Each Earth Day, GreenFriends volunteers join local watershed-protection groups to clean up the areas around the C&O Canal and Potomac River — hauling away fallen limbs and clearing plastic and trash so the land looks cared for and cared about. At the ashram, a productive organic vegetable garden is tended year-round by many volunteers, in keeping with Amma's teachings on living in harmony with nature.
