Cooking for Amma's Birthday

"The best way to celebrate a birthday is to give — to serve those in need."

— in the spirit of Amma's teaching

In honor of Amma's birthday, M.A. Center DC volunteers have served at DC Central Kitchen every September since 2013 — reflecting Amma's message of celebrating her birthday by giving selflessly. Each year around 45–50 volunteers spend the day preparing meals for roughly 3,000 low-income, at-risk and homeless people in Washington, DC. The very first event, in 2013, brought together nearly 60 volunteers who prepared over 2,300 servings to mark Amma's 60th birthday.

About DC Central Kitchen

Founded in 1989, DC Central Kitchen uses food as a tool to strengthen the community — combatting hunger and creating opportunity through food recovery, culinary job training and school meals. It serves over 3,100 people in need across many locations each day. Partnering with them each year lets our community put Amma's teaching of selfless service into practical action.
