In Detroit, about 1 in 6 K–12 students face homelessness or housing instability — arriving at school without even the basic tools to learn. The M.A. Center Michigan organizes an annual drive for Operation Backpack®, a Volunteers of America project, providing 108 fully stocked backpacks to homeless and at-risk students in Detroit as a Guru Purnima offering.
