Ramayana Programs

Ramayana Masam in India begins Wednesday, July 16. Traditionally in Kerala and most of South India, every household reads the Ramayana during the next 30 days.

Here at the M.A. Center Iowa we are starting two programs to honor this tradition:

  • Reading Amma’s commentary on the Ramayana each morning after the 6:30 a.m. Archana — one chapter a day from her book Ramayana Smriti, with time to share its charming anecdotes.
  • Watching the popular new Ramayana video series on Tuesday nights at 6 p.m. — a modern retelling that brings this great epic to life.

The Ramayana is the world’s oldest epic, and hearing its stories is a great spiritual blessing for everyone.

In Kerala, the month of Karkidakam (July–August) is observed as Ramayana Masam, a time for daily recitation of the Adhyatma Ramayanam. As the monsoon rains slow life down, people turn inward — focusing on prayer, discipline, and reflection.

More than a ritual, it is a journey of inner purification — a month to live with devotion, simplicity, and surrender, just like Lord Rama himself.
