Prayers & Mantras

Body

Amma’s whole life is a constant endeavor to bring peace and happiness to as many beings as possible. She offers us simple tools — in the form of prayers and mantras — to find our own happiness and to have a positive effect on the world.

Chanting a mantra or prayer with concentration will definitely create a positive change in nature and help restore harmony.

Mantra

A mantra is a set of sacred syllables in Sanskrit. Through repetition, it calms and focuses the mind, leading gradually to concentration, peace, and happiness. Mantras such as Om Namah Shivaya have been used since time immemorial. Traditionally a seeker received a mantra only after proving ready for it; Amma, however, compassionately gives a mantra to almost everyone who asks, according to each person’s own concept of the Divine.

Prayer for World Peace

Amma recommends peace mantras for daily chanting. One is the universal prayer for world peace:

Lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu — May all beings everywhere be happy and free.

Through this prayer the mind becomes expansive, identifying with all of creation and its wellbeing.

Archana

Archana is the devotional recitation of mantras in Sanskrit. At Amma’s centers around the world, the daily archana includes Amma’s Ashtottara Sata Namavali (the 108 names of Amma), the Sri Lalita Sahasranama (the 1,000 names of the Divine Mother), and the closing arati and prayers.
